Who We Are
Illini EV Concept is a student-run automotive club at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Our membership is diverse, with students of all backgrounds in engineering and business. What unites us is a passion for sustainable energy technology and a desire to build the most fuel-efficient vehicle possible. Every year we are challenged by Shell to design, fabricate, and test a fuel efficient car in the Urban Concept category of the Shell Eco-marathon competition. During our 2017-2018 season, we had complications buying a new hydrogen fuel cell and officially changed our club name and fuel source to compete in the battery division instead of the hydrogen division.
We compete in the Shell Eco-marathon Americas Competition, which is held annually in Detroit. Shell also hosts competitions in Europe and Asia annually. There are two main division in the Eco-marathon: Urban Concept and Prototype. The car competes in the Urban Concept division, meaning we try to create a vehicle that we could see on the road in 5 to 10 years. For each division there are several fuel classes. Our car competes in the battery powered class of the Urban Concept division.
